The South Sea pearls that we carry are of the highest quality, and as one of our best sellers, are guaranteed to be a favorite with your clients. We travel to Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines in search of White South Sea pearls, where the White South Sea pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, are found. Pinctada maxima can be broadly divided into two types, the silver-lipped and the gold-lipped. The silver-lipped variety occurs mainly off Australia's northern shores; it has nacre of a silvery white, which is often the hue of the pearls it produces, another common hue being bluish. It is also large, and so tends to produce large pearls of 12 mm or more in diameter. The gold-lipped variety, on the other hand, which is found in the seas of eastern Indonesia, has a golden-tinted nacre, and yields pearls of gold, cream or silver hues. These pearls are smaller than those of the silver-lipped variety, being around 11 mm in diameter on average. Our Black South Sea Pearls come from the black-lipped oyster (Pinctada margaritifera), which inhabits tropical and subtropical seas. They are cultured in Tahiti, the Cook Islands, and elsewhere. The pearl is actually a mesmerizing symphony of color, with peacock green as theme and overtones of black-green, red, blue, gray and black itself; not surprisingly, any number of women have fallen captive to its charm. Among the rich variety shapes it takes are round, droplet, button, baroque and circular; the particular shape will depend on the thickness of the layers composing the individual pearl.
The Cultured Akoya Pearls that we offer are harvested from the seas surrounding Japan; and area that is blessed with conditions (water temperature and quality, nutrition, etc.) very favorable for the production of beautiful pearls. The appeal of these pearls, cultured from the Akoya Oyster, is said to stem from their obvious beauty - they are the most beautiful of all pearls - and delicate hue, although they are somewhat small in size, only 6-8 mm in diameter on average (10 mm at the most), which is much smaller than white South Sea pearls. The value of these pearls have risen sharply over the past decade, as production has dropped by over 66% during this period due mostly to climatic changes.
The Freshwater pearls that we carry are, quite simply, those that come from mollusks ("triangular clams") that live in inland lakes or rivers - that is, freshwater habitats - as opposed to pearls from marine mollusks. The main freshwater pearl grounds are in China; almost all of the freshwater pearls now in vogue in Japan are of Chinese origin. The best-quality Chinese freshwater pearls are produced along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtse River, in Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang Provinces. The major characteristic of these pearls is that they have no nucleus. Whereas an 8.0 mm Akoya pearl has a round 5.4-6.0 mm diameter nucleus and a 13 mm South Sea pearl a 6.0 mm nucleus, freshwater pearls consist purely of nacreous layers, right down to their centers. The absence of a nucleus means that these pearls can take on a wide variety of shapes, typically falling into one of four types: rice-grain, droplet, button, or round.
Dian Creations also sells Mabe pearls; these "half-pearls" are cultured in a way different from other pearls, by inserting a nucleus to rest directly against the inside of the mother mollusk (which is in the Mabe pearl oyster, Pteria penguin). The oyster then deposits nacre over the nucleus until a semispherical pearl is formed. The penguin wing oyster used as the mother shell for Mabe pearls is widely distributed in the world's tropical and semitropical seas. But the variety yielding the most beautiful and highest-quality Mabe pearls is to be found at the Amami Oshima Islands (off southern Japan), now the northern limit of the species' distribution. The Mabe oyster produces a brilliant nacre with a rainbow-like spectrum of hues, and the Mabe pearls produced from this nacre possess a uniquely penetrating brilliance, with hues ranging from light pink through deep rose-red to a "rainbow" pink tinged with blue and other colors. Sometimes the pearls have gold-pink or other hues of high rarity. This rich variety of lustrous hues combines with nacreous layers of a rarely-seen fineness of texture to give the Mabe pearl its perennial appeal and make it the classic semispherical "half-pearl".
Dian Creations also carries a wide variety of gemstones set in either 14 karat white or yellow gold, and also sold loosely.
